Grapefruit essential oil is cold-pressed from the rind of a grapefruit and has a fresh, citrusy scent. Many of the uses for grapefruit oil are similar to other citrus oils. However, grapefruit oil does not cause as much photosensitivity as other citrus oils do, so it can be used in their place when immediate exposure to the sun is unavoidable.
Grapefruit is primarily used for addictions (drugs), anorexia, suppressing appetite, bulimia, cellulite, dry throat, edema, gallbladder stones, hangovers, decongesting the lymphatic system, mental stress, miscarriage (after), obesity, overeating, performance stress, PMS, slimming/toning, and withdrawal.
Grapefruit oil may also help with cancer, depression, eating disorders, fatigue, jet lag, liver disorders, migraine headaches, premenstrual tension, stress, and sympathetic nervous system stimulation. It may also have a cleansing effect on the kidneys, the lymphatic system, and the vascular system.
Aromatically, grapefruit oil is balancing and uplifting to the mind and may help to relieve anxiety. It blends well with basil, bergamot, cypress, frankincense, geranium, lavender, peppermint, rosemary, and ylang ylang.
