Dry Shampoo with Essential Oils

Does your hair tend to get greasy on the days you don’t wash it? If so, here is a natural solution that you may be able to use to combat this issue.

The ingredients in this dry shampoo are simple: arrowroot powder, cocoa powder (optional), and essential oils. The arrowroot powder absorbs the oil and leaves your hair looking clean. The cocoa powder also helps absorb oil, but it is mainly used to create a darker dry shampoo for those with darker hair. The essential oils are used for scent and to provide extra benefits for your hair.

Modern Essentials suggests the following oils for hair:
Fragile Hair: clary sage, lavender, thyme, sandalwood, wintergreen, and Roman chamomile
Greasy/Oily Hair: basil, cypress, thyme, lemon, and rosemary
Stimulate Hair Growth: thyme, lavender, rosemary, ylang ylang, cedarwood, clary sage, and geranium

When choosing which essential oils to use in your dry shampoo, pick 1–3 of the above oils or other oils that smell good to you, smell good together, and provide the benefits you need.

If you have dark hair and you don’t want to add cocoa powder to your dry shampoo, you can stick with the arrowroot powder and essential oils; but if used in the morning, you may end up with “gray streaks” in your hair from the arrowroot powder. To avoid this, try applying the dry shampoo to your hair the night before to allow sufficient time for the arrowroot powder to completely absorb the oil and disappear before morning.

Dry Shampoo with Essential Oils

Time: 2 minutes active | Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp. arrowroot powder (or for dark hair: 1 Tbsp. arrowroot powder + 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder)
  • 1–3 drops essential oil(s)
  • Salve jar

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the arrowroot powder, cocoa powder (for dark hair), and essential oils. Transfer to salve jar.
  2. To use, dab an old makeup brush into the powder; then tap the brush on the inside of the salve jar lid to shake off the excess powder. Lift up a small section of hair, and apply powder to the hair roots. Repeat with different sections of hair until powder has been applied to all the greasy areas of the hair. Leave for a few minutes before brushing out the excess powder.

Note: If you have dark hair but don’t want to use cocoa powder, just make the dry shampoo with arrowroot powder and essential oils. Apply the dry shampoo at night before going to bed to allow sufficient time for the arrowroot powder to completely absorb the oil and disappear before morning.
